ERC Consolidator Grant for Peter van der Meer

Prof. Dr. Peter van der Meer has been recently awarded the European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant. This personal grant of two million euro is awarded to outstanding scientists.

About the research

Prof. van der Meer is the head of coronary care unit in the university medical center Groningen (UMCG) and combines the clinical work with translational research. By doing so, he tries to bridge the gap between bench and bedside. He focuses mainly on understanding the mechanisms that may lead to heart failure. For this purpose, uses 3D-model tissues that are arrived from stem cells to mimic human cardiomyocytes. Gaining more insights into the fundamental mechanisms involved in heart failure may open the opportunities for novel treatment targets and therapies.
