José Antonio Esquivel Gaytán

PhD Student

José Antonio Esquivel Gaytán received his Bachelor of Science in Medicine in 2016 from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and received his Master of Science in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine at University College London with distinction in 2017. In November 2018, Antonio started working as a PhD candidate under the supervision of prof. Van der Meer and co-supervised by Dr Nils Bömer at the Experimental Cardiology department of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). He is currently exploring 5-oxoprolinase as a potential therapeutic target for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Current activities

Antonio is developing an activity assay for the cardioprotective enzyme 5-oxopolinase to identify possible compounds that can aim and enhance such by employing a high throughput assay screening with subsequent confirmation of compounds in an in vivo setting. Consequently, elucidating a novel treatment for heart failure.
