After finishing his bachelor in Mechanical Engineering in 2000, Jan Walter Benjamins shifted his focus to software engineering. After working for some years in various fields, he started in 2009 as an engineer at the outpatient clinic of the department of Cardiology in the UMCG, where especially imaging caught his attention. His growing interest in image processing, computer vision and ultimately machine learning lead to a PhD track under the supervision of prof. dr. Pim van der Harst, where he focuses on the application of machine learning in cardiovascular research, mainly in the field of ischemia and coronary artery disease.
Current activities:
Jan Walter has primarily worked on imaging projects and the design of a platform aiming at the application of machine learning in existing cardiovascular research projects on cloud based hardware. Currently he extends his research on the platform to other cardiovascular data modalities. Additionally he supports others in genetic analyses.
