Vacancy Physician-Scientist (OUTREACH)

Do you have ambitions to become a cardiologist? Do you want to matter and be meaningful to patients with congenital heart disease? Now and in the future? If so, we have an opportunity for you to apply for a PhD position to do clinical scientific research with a direct link to patient care.

Research line: Heart Failure
Project: OUTREACH

The department of cardiology of the UMCG is a dynamic group where scientific research and clinical practice are closely linked to each other. Problems that we encounter in clinical practice are translated into scientific research questions aimed at further improving care and cure of our patients. We believe that an open scientific atmosphere where talented young clinical researchers get the opportunity to work together in an experienced scientific and clinical environment, will make it possible to find solutions for most clinical challenges.

Job description

To support your ambition to be leading in the cardiovascular playing field you will join a successful line of research to increase your insight in the pathophysiology of patients with congenital heart disease, and patients with a transposition of the great arteries in particular. Under supervision of international experts in the field you will be able to provide your own input and contribution to the solution of problems that we encounter in our daily practice. In addition, you will be trained in cardiac anatomy, (patho)physiology, echocardiography and other imaging modalities. During your PhD program you will be skilled in writing manuscripts,  performing statistical analyses, and giving scientific lectures.

We offer you a position as a physician-PhD (1.0fte) to join a nationwide research collaboration on congenital heart disease funded partly by the Dutch Heart Foundation and Stichting Hartekind (Acronym: Outreach, link). You will use the data of large cohorts of patients with a transposition of the great arteries to gain understanding and insights in the pathophysiology of this congenital disorder. This will lead to potential personalized therapeutic targets that can further improve our current treatment.

The duration of this position is approximately 3-4 years. After successful completion of the PhD-thesis, you will be offered to apply for a position as fellow/resident in our department of cardiology.
